Frank Drachman Jr.
July 28, 1930 - March 30, 2010

DRACHMAN Jr., FRANK E. 1930 to 2010 Frank Emmanuel Drachman Jr., a man dedicated to his family and friends, lived his life to the fullest, every day of his life. After many years of illness, Frank went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 30, 2010. He was 79. Frank was born on July 28, 1930, in Tucson, Arizona. He was the first son of Frank E. Drachman Sr. and Isabel Fairfax Baptist and became a member of one of Tucson's most prominent pioneer families. The Drachman heritage of community mindedness and caring for others was a foundation that guided Frank throughout his business and personal life. Frank graduated in 1948 from Tucson High, where he played football. He then went on to the University of Arizona, receiving a BA in English. While in college he operated his own radio station at the University, was a calf roper on the U of A rodeo team and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He rose to Captain of his ROTC unit and upon graduation entered the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and tank commander. He was a lifelong patriot that never took our freedoms for granted. During a fire-fight in the Korean War, Frank was wounded while he was carrying one of his wounded men to safety. He earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant and the Silver Star for heroism in May 1953. While at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. recovering, he met Joan Hiestand of Denver, Colorado. Frank considered himself one of the luckiest men on earth when they were married only 101 days later. They moved back to Tucson, Arizona where he earned his law degree from the U of A and started their family. Frank and Joan had four children, and lived in Tucson until 1971 when his work took him to San Diego, California. Frank was a practicing lawyer for more than 45 years, with most of those years as General Counsel for University Mechanical Engineering Contractors (UMEC) in San Diego. Frank was an avid sports fan and trap shooter, which he and Joan enjoyed for many years. In San Diego he committed his life to follow Jesus Christ, being introduced to Him through his own children and through the mission of Young Life. With his love of life, he began serving God, instead of just himself and his family. He considered his greatest contributions to be fundraising for Young Life in San Diego, Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, and the United Way of San Diego. Frank never hesitated to get involved in people's lives to help them in any way he could - as a leader, mentor and friend he had the rare ability to make others feel more special when they left his presence than when they arrived. He is survived by his wife Joan, his brother Craig B. Drachman, his son Brud Drachman and his wife Maria Jose and grandchildren Stephanie, Jacob, Heather, Ben and Begonia, his daughter Debbie Worley and her husband Chris and grandchildren Sarah, Hannah and Samuel, his daughter Daren Hillebrandt and her husband Tom and grandchildren Rose and Emily and preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Drachman. A service celebrating Frank's life will be held on Wednesday, April 7th, at 2:00 p.m. at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church at 120 Stevens Ave., Solana Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Young Life San Diego North Coast, 2215 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad, CA 92009-2918
