Betty Lou Harbaugh October 12, 1930 - November 9, 2008 |
Betty Lou Harbaugh was born in San Antonio, Texas, on October 12, 1930, to David and Irene York. She grew up in San Antonio with her twin brother, Donald, and younger sister, JoAnne. After high school she attended Texas Christian University for a year, then graduated from the University of Texas in 1953 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. Betty and her husband, George Harbaugh, were married on June 17, 1956, in San Antonio. While George completed his military service as a B-47 pilot in the United States Air Force, Betty taught school. They were stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California. The couple then returned to San Diego, George's home town. After several years of teaching, Betty left the profession and joined George in the operation and management of their businesses. The kindness and patience that made Betty a great teacher were evident throughout her life. Betty and George became active Trapshooters at Miramar Gun Club and Betty was ranked second among Women Trapshooters in California. The couple shot several times in the Grand American Shoot in Ohio. Betty and George were both interested in the culinary arts and attended several cooking schools including the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. Like George's mother, Betty was a member of The Thursday Club and in her 36 years as a member, served on many Boards. She served as President in 1979-1980. She was presently serving on the Board of The Thursday Club Foundation. Betty was an avid Bridge player and will be sorely missed by her many partners. Betty left us peacefully on November 9, 2008, with George at her side. Private Services will be held on November 20th. A Celebration of Life gathering will be at The Thursday Club on November 21st, from 2 to 4 p.m. Donations in Betty's name may be given to: Published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on 11/16/2008 |
My wife Vi and I were shocked to learn of Betty's passing. Not having seen Betty in several years she was the picture of health when we last were with her. Her culinary skills along with George's were utilized in a very organized manner that made evening meal preparation a very special time. Once each week they would prepare a daily dinner menu for the coming week followed by the weekly grocery needed shopping. I'm not talking macaroni and cheese meals, I'm talking gourmet dishes like chicken cordon bleu. This was one of their team efforts that kept them working closely together. We'll miss you Betty.
