MILLER, PETER GUY Peter Guy Miller passed away on May 9, 2007 in Chula Vista, California. He made his transition exactly as he had requested, in the comfort of his home, lovingly encircled by family and friends. He was 60 years old. Born on July 20, 1946 in Highland Park, Michigan, he was a resident of San Diego for over 37 years. Peter was unfailingly courageous during the short four month period after being diagnosed with terminal cancer until his death. He received life-long friends who traveled to California to say their final good-byes, including Jerry, Nanci, and Danny Denham of Nancy, KY; Art and Sharon Libert of Columbus, OH; Jesse Orick of Lima, OH, and Roy Rizor of Harrod, OH. Many others from out of state spoke with Peter over the phone. Peter was a Master Machinist who worked primarily in aerospace and technical industries. His last employment at Va-Tran Systems in Chula Vista was his "dream job" where he loved both the creative aspects of his work and his co-workers. I.Q. testing during his adolescent years proved Peter was intellectually gifted. He applied his intellect to a lifetime passion for firearm history, gun collecting, and target shooting. Peter perfected the art of re-loading, and was widely recognized as a talented gunsmith. Peter was proud to be Life Member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid supporter of the second Amendment of the United States Constitution that declares "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." He stood squarely behind the premise that the ownership of firearms must not be denied to law-abiding Americans. He was dedicated to firearm safety education, marksmanship training, and the sport of shooting as a form of recreation. Peter was also an active member of the National Skeet Shooting Association, and the San Diego Shotgun Sports Association. Some of his happiest times in recent years were weekends spent at the shooting range with his friend, George Magarrell and his other shooting buddies. His last hope was to go shooting just one more time. We now have thoughts of Pete in heaven with his treasured gun collection, unlimited ammo, and all the time and space he wants to shoot 'em up. Peter Guy Miller is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Cary Bickler of San Diego, CA; his brother Jeff Miller of Escondido, CA; his sisters Nancy Brazil of Port Orford, OR and Beth Ann Miller of Malibu, CA; his nieces, nephews and extended family. Mr. Miller's remains were cremated. A memorial service and Wake will be held at Peter's home at Noon on Sunday, June 3, 2007. Family and friends are welcome. | Peter was a wonderful man who enjoyed trap shooting immensely. Just two weeks ago we shot a number of rounds together and even though his scores were in the 20’s he was very disappointed that his Parkinson’s disease was making it more and more difficult for him to shoot than ever before. He was one of those people that really enjoyed being outdoors on the trap field with a shotgun in his hands. His big smile when he saw you always made you feel like you were about to visit with a great old friend. Over the years we have shot many targets together and I have always thought of him as a serious competitor who could take home a trophy when he had a good day. I was always happy to see Peter on field #4 when I came out to practice as I knew I would have a fun and competent squad mate who’s mere presence made the day more fun! I will miss Peter’s friendship and his quaint accent very much. Barry Sinkoff A |
| Pete was a man of enduring strength and with a positive will to conquer his ailments. I had met Pete on the skeet field with his good friend, George Magarrell, and he was an immediate likeable person. Just recently I had the opportunity to visit with him in the hospital. He looked frail but again he had a most resilient positive attitude. The last time I saw Pete was a couple of weeks ago at the range and he was driving his car with a car full of friends and looked and acted like he was going to win his health battle. His manner was jovial and was looking forward in returning to shoot in the near future. I, like others, will miss Pete. We could use his attitude as an inspiration to us all. He had the strength and conviction to be a winner on the field as well as in life. May Pete rest in peace. Neil Vann - SDSSA Past President |
| Pete Miller was one of my best friends for 15 years. We became friends from shooting Trap in those early years. Later we moved to Skeet. I would shoot with him most every Sunday. The last time was 3 weeks ago. It was with our .410 gauge shotguns as that was all the recoil he could stand. You will truly be missed Peter. I hope to shoot with you again on the other side and I'd like to think your last words were 'Pull'. George Magarrell |
